Martin Smith
Martin Smith
BSc Hons, LicAc, MBAcC

Martin's first interest in holistic medicine was ignited through a stay with monks in a Buddhist monastery. It was here that he realised holistic medicine to be an integral part of life and that health is far more encompassing than only the condition of one's body. With this vision in mind, Martin has since extensively studied Eastern medicine in Taiwan, China and the UK. He is a fully qualified practitioner of acupuncture, having completed a four-year BSc Hons Acupuncture degree in the UK in combination with several years of previous study and experience in the field of holistic medicine. In addition, Martin has recently completed a certificated clinical internship at the Shanghai Acupuncture Research Institute, China.

Martin is also one of the first practitioners to introduce sensation-free multi-laser acupuncture, a system that uses focused but gentle light to stimulate the body's own healing system. In this way, this new and effective therapy is suitable for those that are less inclined towards the traditional metal acupuncture needle. Martin is currently the only practitioner in the UK to have studied this system with world renowned doctors using this new technique in Zurich, Switzerland. Martin has been awarded membership to the British Acupuncture Council, The Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine, The Federation of Holistic Therapists and European Federation of Modern Acupuncture and continues to develop his knowledge for the benefit of his patients.

PhD, BSC Hons, DipClinNeuro,

Born in North London 1957. Educated in Ireland. Originally trained as a PE teacher. Moved to Denmark 1979. Played football for HIK but serious knee injury finished his short career in 1982.

As part of his rehab he started using the Jane Fonda aerobics program.

He started teaching aerobics and opened Scandinavia’s first aerobic centre "Sweatshop" in the centre of Copenhagen in 1982.

In 1984 he became a fitness and rehab consultant to the Danish national badminton teams, handball teams and many club sides.

He supervised rehabilitation and fitness programs for many of Denmark’s elite sportsmen including Kirsten Larsten and Ib Frederickson, former all England singles badminton champions.

His achievements with Danish athletes were widely reported in the media, one newspaper over did it a bit describing him as a miracle worker.

In 1984 "Team Denmark" hired him and his facilities to help prepare some of their elite athletes for the LA and Seoul Olympics. In 1990 he worked with Anya Anderson, Olympic gold medallist and voted worlds best female handball player at the Atlanta Olympics.

In 1986 Richard advised Copenhagen’s Rigs hospital on their rehab facility. In the same year he started working with Ole Wessung DC (chiropractor to the Danish National football team), who introduced him to the wonders of Chiropractic; they still work closely together. In 1990 he moved back to England to study chiropractic at AECC, was student president for 1994-1995 and 1995-1996. Graduated in 1996 and runs his own family care practice in Kingston-Upon-Thames.

He is still active in sport circles, he sees no difference in the spinal care a 28 year old man needs and a 28 year old athlete. What is different is the intensity of training the athlete’s needs to perform at the highest level. All Richards clients want to perform optimally.

He does not have a gym in his clinic. "It would be a step back for me. Why have a gym when I can have a library that will enable people to empower themselves and take responsibility for their own health".

In more recent years Richard had completed his masters in Health Promotion and is studying for his Diploma in Clinical Neurology. He stills finds time to do two weeks voluntary work in the Cuban health service every year. . Richard has three children.
